Becoming Mommy: Muslim Matrescence
Shownotes:
There’s a lot to say about “mothers’ status” in Islam, but sadly, not enough about how to support her to maintain and thrive there. It’s hella lonely and confusing on these pedestals. We aren’t looking for trophies, just Jannah (heaven), but some of us get lost along the way.
Good news! There’s a whole field of study about it! Matrescence, the developmental transition into motherhood, is both spiritual AND practical for Muslims. There’s no other way we know how to do things, but we weren’t always here. It took a long way, through a lot of parenting potholes and pitfalls to get where we are, and we aren’t done yet. Take a walk down memory lane with us and maybe tune in for some familiar experiences and sentiments.
We didn’t mean to start the waterworks this early in the series, but here we are. Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or head to our website landing page. Share this episode with a new mama or even better, a mama to be, who can inshaAllah avoid curveballs where we did not.

Does Shia/Sunni Matter in America?
Shownotes:
☪☪On this popular replay from 2020 (can you believe it's been that long?!?!?!), podcaster mom, Farheen Raza @freeniraza, shared Shia history, practice, and whether or not sects make a difference in America. During this time of division and change in our nation, it DOES matter when we have schisms within Muslim America. Let's close those gaps together. A lot has changed for Farheen since we recorded this, so follow her and find out what that is.
☪☪Part 2 of this conversation was aired in June 2020, and we encourage you to follow up with that one next. This week, tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, Amazon Music, or head to our website and listen on the landing page. Share this episode with your Muslim friends who you never thought to ask about their sect (and thank goodness you didn't!).

Replay: Childhood Sexual Abuse with Buddy Speaks
Shownotes: .
Trigger warning!
This episode is NOT meant to be heard by children unless our mom audience feels they're ready for it. If you're a survivor of any sexual trauma, as a child or as an adult, you may not be ready for it either, so gauge your ability to revisit the past. We are here for you either way. If you need resources to deal with PTSD due to a history of abuse, we have links for you in the shownotes, and we are always just a DM/PM or email away.
This episode IS meant to prepare us to hear the hard truths about child sex abuse, such as our personal experiences with it, how pervasive it is, and also new things, like how subversive it can be. Learn about grooming, disclosure, even forgivenesss, and how to be the safety net our kids need in the event that the worst should happen; may Allah SWT protect them all always. Ameen.
Shariea Shoatz and our team made ourselves incredibly vulnerable in this episode because we trust our Muslim and non Muslim mom sisters to receive these hard truths in love and compassion, and to offer those in turn to themselves, as well as to their children. We are not alone in this. ... Sexual abuse doesn't happen because we are Americans and that's "this culture." NO! Sexual abuse doesn't monopolize any one country or society. Many cultures within and without the US have to deal with it, but we have the opportunity to dive deep into this difficult topic and figure out how to prevent and treat it. Mommying means rolling up our sleeves for the sake of the kids and our God-given duty to protect them at all costs.
Shariea Shoatz is on the money when she says education is the best prevention, so that's where most of this conversation will be. Hugs for anyone who needs them after this one!
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or click on our bio to listen right on our website. Share this episode with all your mom friends because education is the best prevention.

Replay: Invisible Mom
Shownotes: .
Anyone ever feel self pity as you pick up in the kitchen at the end of the night, get laundry started or finished in the dark, put toys back where they belong, or end up refilling the tank at the most inopportune time because no one else did it? Are you the only one praying at salah time because your reminders fall on deaf ears or outright refusal?
Review th status of mothers in Islam and be confident in our role as seen by our Creator. We believe in the angels recording even when people are not. Kids’ sense of security in knowing we are always there. They are taught early on “mother, mother, mother” and will never see us as “nobody.” And because Allah SWT sees us, can we ever be invisible?
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or click on our bio for the website to listen and share this with momsisters who may feel invisible. Shoot them a text that reads "I see you" and check out what happens.

Replay: My Muslim Kid & Drugs
Shownotes: .
Tina Khan joins us today to discuss her experience watching her son’s spiral into drugs and mental health crises and what it did to their family. This is definitely an episode you want to hear before you choose to let your kids listen in, but it really does merit a listen by young people to hear what drug addiction does, not just to an individual, but a family and community.
Where are we as a Muslim community in terms of supporting our young Muslims struggling with drug addiction, and just as importantly to our momcrew, are we there for our moms who have a child in crisis like this? If not now, WHY NOT. If not now, WHEN?

Creating the Lives We Want
Shownotes: .
Our guest this week is, Marena Riyad, comedienne, creative, crafter, community builder, and crash courser in life. We got some learning today! From kidnapping to "it takes a village" to "be A LOT uncomfortable" to get where we want to go in life, we found a lot of Marena's talking points really hit home. Young wisdom is so very humbling, especially when it clearly demonstrates how to reconcile immigrant histories and write our own chapters in them.
What does that look like when we grow up with stalwart models of resilience and sacrifice? It often means inheriting a strong work ethic and failure-is-not-an-option gameplan, but there is a room to follow our north stars. Marena demonstrates this beautifully. Whether you're an immigrant, a child of immigrants, or someone striving to make their mark in the world, this episode will resonate.
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or head to our website landing page for a compelling discussion on ambition, resilience, and the beauty of crafting a life that reflects both where we come from and where we're going.

From Barbados to Becoming: Building a Legacy for Change
Shownotes:
We are celebrating Shellie McKinney of @momnetwork today, a first generation Muslim American and dedicated community organizer, who channels the resilience and spirit of her immigrant mother from Barbados. Growing up, Shellie learned from her mother's lead and "make lemonade" squeeze, founding an organization that is making the lives of our Muslim moms and children better.
But what ARE the experiences of a first generation immigrant who code switches Bajan so adeptly, you wouldn't guess she's Brooklyn-born? And how do these experiences affect her mothering today? Hear how Shellie's late mother's love and strength lifted new immigrants, and inspired future generations to fully embrace their culture. Today, Shellie works tirelessly to build stronger, more inclusive communities, honoring her mother's legacy with every step she takes.🌟

Children of Immigrant Parents
Shownotes:
@zeena_altalib joins us for the first of our Children of Immigrants series this month, recounting her family's move to the US from Iraq, her experience of it as a teen and now, as a mom. At the end of the day, we determine that mothering is the same whether you are an immigrant mom or native born, but the paths to and from there may be different. Certainly, the challenges are!
As a mom of boys and a business coach, Zeena's coping strategies are noteworthy, so grab a pad and pencil and listen to this one! As a child of immigrants, her aid to her parents is also something to write home about.

If you've missed these episodes because you've been heartbroken and gaping at your phones over the ongoing horrors that have surpassed our wildest imaginations, we get it. Mom Made in Palestine
Shownotes:
Today’s guest, Morgan Cooper @mashjar_juthour, has lived and breathed Palestine for over two decades and is online telling Americans what her experiences have been as a Christian human in the land. She’s witnessed the DAILY government apartheid and violence against indigenous people and hasn’t been shy to speak up, a warrior mom to Palestinian children being raised on their historical land. Your heart will swell with pride, and break when she shares what she has to teach her kids to be safe there. In this episode, you’ll note us trying not to say “West Bank,” given what she’s has taught us about the language of colonization and violence.
Morgan is a mom and environmental activist, preserving Palestinian land and culture in the ways she knows how: by raising proud Palestinian children, and supporting local female artisans so that the crafts of the land can recruit hearts outside of it. Handmade Palestine has been her passion project for almost a decade and through it, we can help support indigenous mothers and their liberation. Her message to Gazan mothers, well, another tearjerker.
We thought about splitting this into two episodes, but it just couldn’t be done because of the efforts we had to let everyone know about on the ground to help Palestinian moms TODAY. So this may take the drive lines as well as your day’s errands to complete. For those out of school, it’s a good way to start a road trip, but we promise you’ll finish before you hit the next state.

Gazan Moms of the Diaspora
Shownotes:
Did you know that much of the Palestinian diaspora is forbidden by Israel to return to Palestine, despite Article 13(2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which requires nations to ensure the safe return of refugees to their homeland? Unless you know a Palestinian, you probably didn’t.
Amal Fayad is one such member of this diaspora, numbering in the millions across the world, who knows Gaza, through the stories of her family. Both of her parents grew up in Gaza, but cannot go back, even with an American passport. Hear about her dad’s survival at sea as a toddler, her grandmother’s strength, as well as what “equal” rights currently means for Palestinian “citizens” of Israel.
Tune in at 6pm EST to Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or head to our website to take a listen. Share this episode with someone who insists Palestinians are equal citizens of Israel.

Where Are Muslims on Campus Right Now?
Shownotes:
We had too good a conversation not to make an episode out of it, and thank you to Shehla Faizi of @imamuslimpodcast for initiating it! Basically, like the majority of the country, we moms are asking:
WTH is going on on our student campuses?
Why on earth would students put their education, finals, safety and futures on the line for Gazans they don’t even know?
Why are peaceful student encampments met with such brutal force?
Why is everyone vs. the students protesting genocide and not the actual genocide in Gaza?
What can we do in solidarity with our students?
If you take nothing else away from this conversation, SHOW UP.

Replay: Perpetuity of Spiritual Productivity
Shownotes:
We are in dire need of it, hence the replay of Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi's episode about impediments to spiritual consistency in our lives. While some folks tried to white knuckle it through Ramadan, we used it to treat our broken hearts and rage. But we are still worried about how to make the essence of this month make the world make sense after Eid. How do we carry our Ramadan routines forward past this blessed month and not lose the spiritual high we SO NEED right now?
Let’s talk about train cars, the myth of parental ownership, suhbah (spiritual companionship), acts of worship we can rely on no matter our stage of motherhood, and insha’Allah walk away feeling energized to maintain the magic of Ramadan, keeping up steam for the rest of the year. Allahuma ameen.
Tune in to this episode and share it with a friend who needs to keep filling her cup while she hits the streets and phone banks to stop a manmade catastrophe THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED if everyone paid more attention to ALL children, and not just their own.

Female Scholaship & Safe Spaces
Shownotes:
This week’s hiatus replay is Shaykha Tamara Gray, founder of Rabata, an online institute for and by Muslim women to educate themselves in Islam. She’s also an experienced mom who has a lot to share with moms about allying with their kids as part of their mothering.
Mic drop moment 32:36 when Anse Tamara reminds us about the etymological relationship of the words “umm” (mother) and “imam” (one in front of whom we study, or leader), but on a lighter note at 44:15 “Anse Tamara: I am green beans!” Serious butterflies and chills in this episode, so don’t miss it!
Tune in at 6pm EST and share with a momsister in search of female scholarship. Remember to pray for those memorizers of Quran and scholars we have lost in the past several months, in G@z@ especially, due to a siege that was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable.

Motherhood and Multiple Loss
Shownotes:
Thirteen thousand children and counting....and as you heard on our hiatus announcement, at home, moms are losing their kids, too, to the continued shock of the community. Why are we so shocked? Are we untouchable, above grief and trials from Allah? No, He's promised them to us, and we pray to pass all those tests. Ameen.
One of the moms who came on before is our beloved teammate, Saira Sufi, who even recently moved us to tears at our gala when she shared the story of her son, Hadi. She is our role model, who embodies beautiful patience and imaan while facing what we can only imagine is lifelong grief. Despite losses that we would describe as "crushing," she crushed them, and instead has built a legacy for Hadi that will make those of us who never met him, truly regretful.
This may be a triggering episode for anyone who has suffered immense loss and grief, so maybe listen in a group so you can support each other through this episode. Remember to pray for our sisters and families abroad who are waking up every day to the wrenching reality of an unalived child or relative. Their grief is so tragic because it was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable.
Also, let’s never forget to support medical research and to join minority blood registries in case we can ever help another family avoid illness and loss. This episode is for every mom, sibling, and family who’s ever experienced the loss of a child, and we pray for their continued healing and reward with Allah SWT. Ameen.

Unready for Ramadan with Zaiba & Uzma
Shownotes:
Zaiba and Uzma discussed how they faced the biggest "mommying challenges" during Ramadan 2019, and how they break us and make us. In light of the current siege in G@z@, we feel broken indeed and for that reason look forward to Ramadan.
We were inspired to replay this due a recent post by @drhanaa,peacewithinhome, because the ummah is sharing survivors' guilt while our brothers and sisters suffer across the world because of our tax dollars. Everything sticks in our throats where our rage and tears are balled up, but her recent post about how to explain this Ramadan to our kids is key, and this episode is a reminder of the lengths we have gone to in the past for our families in Ramadan. This year, the stakes are higher. Oh, Allah, You are The One Who forgives greatly, and loves to forgive, so forgive us. (Tirmidhi).
And let this be the Ramadan that brings forgiveness, mercy, and peace to the ones who need it most. Allahuma ameen. Tune in at 6pm EST and share with a momsister who also can't remember the excitement of this most beloved guest of the year, Ramadan.

Vulvodynia Diagnosis, Prognosis, & Treatment
Shownotes:
If this month's series title scared you, we can imagine today's episode title will, too. Rest assured, we have very tame info for everyone. In fact, it's info meant to help tame the problems we think are really big and we have all to ourselves, when, in fact, many people suffer silently with the same. And silence helps NO ONE. Getting control in the bedroom is everyone's right.
We've talked pathology all month, so let's talk about practical equipment to help with some of those physical changes with time. What we use to get control CAN be used for kink, but it's not all about that at all. Drop your judgements at the door and grab your headphones for this one--not for easy listening while you're at the park with the kiddos!

Honeymoon Cystitis to Menopausal Dryness
Shownotes:
We kick off our February series with the theme: Kink & Control in the Bedroom. Who better to teach us control there than Dr. Neda, NP, who joins us today to talk about sex during early conjugal relations in Muslim American bedroom life, and in later phases. While she’s better known as @hijabiluscious, her professional career has her taking care of people and their health needs first. And sex is a vital health need, as well as a marker of good health.
Body autonomy is something near and dear to her, and she takes it a notch up by teaching us how to keep those luscious bodies autonomous and satisfied once they’re participating more often (emphasis on “often”) in sexual activities. Find out how to troubleshoot what’s not feeling right and more importantly, how to talk to both your doctor and partner about it.
