Visceral News Reactions
Shownotes:
As we kick off our August series, “Muslims in the News,” Zaiba and Uzma review past big headlines that affected their physical and mental safety. Ask yourself how news coverage would have been different, and HAS been different for non Muslims suspects. When do Muslim Americans hold their collective breaths and why?
This is a series asking the hard questions about what we expect from the news and how biased news coverage can endanger Muslim American moms and their kids. Learn about their perpetual grief process and follow along this month as they highlight some solutions to prevent the dissemination of Islamophobic news coverage.
There’s some slamming hands on the table--we apologize!

Muslimah Erasure in Music
Shownotes:
When we discuss entertainment, we think about music, too. Muslimahs have been making music for centuries, but a lot of us haven't been taught that. Amira Daugherty talks about her path from law to music, from activism to making history on American Idol, all without encouragement or accolades because Muslimah voices don't get them. This rapper, singer, and spoken word artist is literally using her voice to communicate across boundaries and connect with humanity, facing hurdles within and outside of her community.
She’s also got a special ability you'll want to hear about as she attempts to create more inclusive American Muslimah representation.

Muslim American Casting
Shownotes:
Serena Rasoul, founder of Founder of Muslim American Casting, LLC joins us today to talk about Muslims in Entertainment. After House of Cards and other acting opportunities, Serena decided to pursue authentic representation of SW Asian, North African and Arab Muslims. Like other sheroes on the podcast this month, she addresses miscasting, Muslim tropes, and compromises that Muslim talent may have to make in Hollywood because the industry doesn’t understand their values and work ethic. It certainly doesn’t understand Muslims telling their own stories, which is why Muslim writers and filmmakers can get support from Serena and her company. Through Muslim American Casting, Serena is “Creating spaces, adding new faces.”
Hear her on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, or Alexa tonight at 6pm EST.

Manifesting Duaa and Dreams of Andalus
Shownotes:
Isra Hashmy joins us today to discuss her epiphany during the rat race of life and following Allah’s guidance to pursue her dream until it manifested into reality. Following the expat life isn’t as easy as we think, so she explains some of those details that could provide hiccups to a family planning on living overseas. Then there’s the hiccups you DON’T plan for, like a pandemic that separates your family and you’re with the kids in a country where you don’t speak the language. So, not traumatic at all. The hard parts didn’t make it on House Hunters International, but the fun ones did, so check out her family on there.

Why All Male Panels are Canceled
Shownotes:
Note: Since the breaking of the ceasefire by Israel, Hamas did not retaliate after the indiscriminate attacks on Muslim worshippers at the Aqsa compound on Friday 5/21/21. However, no further arms were deployed by either side, but since then, Israel has launched Operation Law and Order. According to this new act, Israel arrested over 500 Palestinians identified as involved in the protests that led to the massive bombing and murder to civilians in Gaza with the excuses of “but Hamas” and “Israeli self defense.” This is in addition to the 1500 Palestinians arrested without warrants by Israel before the murder campaign. Israel has advanced facial recognition technology and Big Brother knows who is at which protest and can prove it, then find them for protesting/peacefully assembling/speaking freely; you know, exercising democratic principles.
Hind Makki discusses all male panels and additional exclusionary practices that marginalize Muslimahs, both in the audience and in expert spaces, at conferences, seminars, and in the masjid space itself! These under-represented panels are hurting our institutions and driving financially independent and Islamically educated women away from the masjid and Islamic organizations. Since many of us had to learn how to live without the masjid during key parts of our worship, are we going to go back if we continue to be under-represented there? Let's discuss the bottom line.
For anyone who isn’t Muslim, there’s some great breakdowns about Islam in here for you, too.
How do you feel when you see all male panels on parenting?

Shownotes:
Kristy Sabbah joins us today as a former masjid board member and community leader. She reveals issues women on the board face and what they need from the community to support them. Women on Women Microaggressions in the Prayer Hall
Shownotes:
Mommying While Muslim has never been late to drop an episode except Eid al Fitr 2021! We hope our lovely audience understands how excited we were to celebrate with our families and we wanted to edit something worth your listening ears.
Today is an opportunity to hear about our experiences in the masjid that hurt our hearts because we know the masjid can do better by us as women, mothers, and for our children. Hey, no one’s perfect, and no masjid is perfect, and we don’t want perfection. Can we attend masjid (once it’s safe again) without women, our very own sisters, calling out our kids or what we are wearing (or aren’t wearing), and judging each other over stuff we really don’t have too much jurisdiction over. Let’s do our work, and let Allah do His work. But we have to start by addressing what’s wrong and what each of us can do better ourselves.
Our goal is to get our unmosqued Muslim families mosqued again. Let’s make it home again.

Reasons to do it Again
Shownotes:
Sadia Jalali is the founder of Muslim Bliss and Uzma’s college roommate, and back on this podcast to talk about why Muslims moms CHOOSE to go back to the nursery. On this episode of our New Mommy Memoirs series, we change it up by discussing life’s changes that sometimes necessitate having another child in the second (or third) phase of life.
She poses her zen approach to parenting and the epiphany that made her change her “never” to “maybe” to “okay” NINE years later. It’s worth thinking about for anyone who is on the fence and doesn’t want to say “what if” in a few years. Cheers to second chances and intentional pregnancies, as well as anyone who weathered a pandemic or single pregnancy! You’ll REALLY want to catch the very end of this episode for a fun gotcha moment.

Our good friend Shmila Javed is on today to share her new mommy memoirs in the context of a blended family. We are thankfully losing our hang ups about Muslim nuclear families in America, thereby getting closer to the prophetic model of a happy, healthy household alhamdulillah. After a tough month in March, we are ready to talk about BABIES! We’re taking a walk down memory lane with a mom who recently had one in the strangest year on record. Sofia Kamal received a “subhanAllah surprise” when her then youngest was 10 years old and she’d been “done.”
Her journey to motherhood was fraught with tests including PCOS and a challenging career as a lawyer, but even the tail end of that was a lesson in patience and gratitude. But He Doesn’t Hit Me
Shownotes:
Madiha Schader joins us today to talk about her experience learning early on that she married someone who wouldn't be safe for her, yet how she continued to hide the details from her family and friends. The cultural reasons she did this are very clear in her story. She’s not unique, but what she focuses on today is that abusive domestic relationships don’t always include physical violence. Mental, emotional, verbal abuse, financial/social isolation and unreasonable demands from a place of control that endanger a person’s psychosocial wellbeing are equally suffocating and a matter of life and death.
Madiha’s freedom actually came through her own son and her body. Find out how her closest friends identified what was happening and supported her until she was able to decide it was time to save herself.
If you know someone you suspect is in danger of physical violence or mental oppression, ASK her. Then help her using the resources listed below. If you’re someone who is in danger, having kids WILL NOT change an abuser towards you and might direct abuse toward your kid(s).

Samia Masood joins us today to talk about her harrowing experience through her son's illness and how she survived it. Life pre diagnosis and post diagnosis is a real thing and very delineated in a mom’s mind and heart for life and we work out some trauma together. When it’s Time to Walk Away
Shownotes:
We're all about love and marriage this month. Until we're not. Not all marriages work out, and we don't say "succeed" or "fail" because marriage isn't an Olympic event, y'all. Sometimes two people just don't belong together, and when kids are involved, decisions must be made.
Rayesa Gheewala, The Muslimah Divorce Coach, talks to us today about the heartbreaking truths of divorce, including the aftermath that can leave a mom gutted if she doesn't know where to get help. The answer is already one we know, and Rayesa is so gifted at leading us back to natural, nonverbal knowing, or our fitra. The role of ego in anything, especially in divorce, really needs more exploring in ways that we’ve never heard of before. We also touch on what’s causing Muslim divorces during this pandemic, and how to identify when it’s the end of the road.
Take notes! The pearls in this episode are for anyone even CONTEMPLATING a relationship.
