Muslim Kids: Sexpressured
Shownotes:
She's BAAAAAAACK.....Y'all loved Cliteracy Consciousness last year with Dr. Shaakira Abdullah @thehalalsexpert, but now she's talking to us about the pressures Muslim kids face in and around sex. Is it just Hollywood hype, and how do we prep our kids to keep it halal and locked up until marriage?
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Spotify, or head to our website for easiest listening. Google will take you right there.
And if we are hard to contact this weekend, we are partying in Dallas at our Fill Up Your Cup Retreat, so please give us a week to recover and answer your DMs and emails.

Womb Wellness & Yoni Steaming
Shownotes:
WOW! Let us apologize for the echo on this episode. However, we think it’s tolerable. Our DMs have been popping through the year with questions about yoni or vaginal steaming, so we needed to find a practitioner who knows more about this.
Chantal Blake joins us from Dakkar, crossing the sea just to teach us about the globally ancient science of yoni steaming, a technique that addresses common issues women encounter daily. Heavy periods, infertility, sexual issues, watch out! Steaming may be the key to plumper, healthier vulva and uterus. In addition, let’s talk herbs, hot and cold foods, and diet as it relates to overall women's health.
Of course, none of this episode is medical advice, but it is information about female reproductive and sexual wellness that we deserve to know is out there as an option when maybe we’ve hit a wall with everything else. Ask a doctor you trust, or check out our links in Shownotes for certified vaginal steaming practitioners near you.
Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or check out our website for easiest listening.

Common Muslim Sex Hang Ups
Shownotes:
We kick off this podcast episode by apologizing to the Michigan Spartans! IFYKYK. Dr. Sadaf Lodhi OB/GYN sets us straight REAL fast on this episode! She is not only a practicing doctor to women, she is also host of The Muslim Sex Podcast and a certified Sex Coach.
THEN we start talking about the good stuff to launch our “Muslim Moms Aren't Nuns” series this February. What are the silent conversations Muslims are having with themselves about sex, or what are the stories we make up about sex because we aren’t comfortable admitting what we don’t know? Where our sex baggage comes from boils down a lot to where our thoughts originate, and on our ability to separate THOUGHTS from FACTS. Let’s figure out where some of those thoughts are born and how to stop bearing them forward.
What are the keys to raising our kids to have a healthy understanding of sex without making it sound too good to miss? Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music or check out our website to listen to our episodes.

Escape to Exile
Shownotes:
In this finale of our limited series “Oppressed Mother,” hear how Mihrigul Tursun fought the PRC, and how her government demanded she relinquish her Egyptian citizenship or have her family in China imprisoned. Impossible choices a mother, daughter, sister, victim, must face.
At the cost of family reunification, Mihrigul testified through translators to Congress. Not only can she never return to her homeland, she is raising her living children alone and apart from her husband who is forced into hiding, all while contesting state led propaganda denying her trauma and that of millions more Uyghurs.
Tune in at 6pm EST to learn the rest of her story and how to help a single mother who has survived unimaginable trauma maintain hope and get justice. Share our Shownotes with friends as they are FULL of calls to action to make “Never again” more than just a quote for the history books. May all our mothers and children live in peace and safety across the globe.

Education Campus to “Re-Education” Camp
Shownotes:
Trigger warning: torture
Mihrigul Tursun, Chinese citizen, recounts her journey out of China to higher education and global awareness: now she was surrounded by donkeys instead of chickens! Outside the PRC she also experienced her Islamic awakening, which would end up costing her freedom and threaten her children’s lives. Something as simple as what she newly wore on her head identified her as the “other” in the PRC, and landed her in a concentration camp. That’s not what they’re called by any media, Chinese or otherwise. They’re called “re-education centers.”
She recounts her torture by the PRC and the conditions of her release. What she saw behind the walls of these centers is beyond our imaginations. It’s mind blowing to think that any government could sell her limited options as choices, laced with threat and death, to barter her release to civilian society. Only it wasn’t, as all of her limited civil liberties in the PRC, were shrunken further just because she was Muslim.
Tune in to hear her story in her own words at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts or Stitcher (both on your phones already!), Amazon Music, ask Alexa, or go directly to our website and catch up on this limited series. Don’t forget to read the Shownotes on our website for personal and professional accounts of genocide in the PRC, as well as how you can help right now.

BONUS: Novel Suicidal Intervention
Shownotes:
Dr. Sheba Shah, MD comes on to talk about her path to helping patients with refractory depression and acute suicidality and newer methods to treat, namely, ketamine infusions. These centers are popping up all over the country and we want to make sure that our audience families know what to look for and what to run away from ASAP.
Not insignificant is a nod to Dr. Sheba Shah’s mom because behind every successful person is the driving force of a mom. Make duaa for her and ameen. Further, learn the history of and criteria for ketamine treatment, the types available, and what steps to take with your primary care doctor and/or psychiatrist to find out how to set it up for those who qualify. We want to make sure that those in our audience who regularly struggle with suicidal thoughts have HOPE, but we cannot a guarantee a cure. We are praying for all of you over here.
Tune in at 6pm EST for this BONUS episode that we had to put out for you because we wanted to be solutions-focused here on the podcast, but in no way is this episode medical advice. It is meant to provide medical options to discuss with your medical team. Share this with someone you know is struggling to be seen and cared for.

Muslims & Suicide
Shownotes:
Trigger warning: suicide
========
Zaiba & Uzma tackle the topic of suicide in American and particularly in Muslim America. Remember what NOT to say to high functioning friends or acquaintances because we never know what someone else’s private battles are. And everyone has them. Does the sin attributed to suicide deter Muslims from it? We wish it did, but it doesn’t cut the hummus.
If you don't know what KYS is, it’s super important to screen our kids’ devices for that abbreviation. Also hear how to speak to the kids to prevent suicidal ideation because prevention is key. The effect of social media on our children’s mental health and subsequent potential for suicidality is not something we can flip a disdainful wrist at with “not my kid.”
Research on Muslim suicidality is sparse, but preliminary data shows us that religious groups with the highest rates of suicidality include Muslims in the #1 spot! That is not a trophy we want to be winning, y’all. Hear about the social determinants, ie Islamophobia and western media biases lending toward higher rates of Muslim suicide.

Muslim Mom Overwhelm
Shownotes:
Sudduf Wyne of Salam Sadaf business coaching is a self proclaimed recovering perfectionist and mom of triplets. You’ve probably seen her speak on the toughness of mothering on social media. She is on today to address the overwhelm and pressures of mothering that make us feel inadequate. Say no to “supermom mythology!” It’s a scam, y’all.
Our guest has amazing tips on what to do to prevent mommy burnout and shame about admitting that as moms, we all need help. Let’s consider the blessings we withhold from our friends who offer to help and we refuse because we “should” be able to “do it all” ourselves. Motherhood is not meant to be done in a silo, and our Islamic traditions exemplify community caring for children.
The effects of absorbing those pressures from without and within can wreak havoc on mothers’ mental health and we insist on outsourcing and asking for/accepting help. It’s hard to acknowledge that we really cannot do it all, but we shouldn’t be expected to do it all. Definitely not all at once. Why is that considered successful anyway???
Work smart, not hard, so we can prevent mommy burnout and show up 100% for our kids, NOT for the cultural narratives that unequally burden mothers more than other members of the family. Tune in at 6pm EST wherever you listen to podcasts tonight and leave a review.

ADHD & Muslim Moms
Shownotes:
Shehla Faizi host and producer of I’m a Muslim & That’s Okay wears a lot of hats as a graphic artist, podcaster, and mom extraordinaire. Add to her repertoire, mom of a child with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and you have a recipe to learn A LOT.
We are too aware of the difficulty in helping our children get assistance with any kind of mental health assistance, but consider how hard it is to get a diagnosis as Shehla did. What did she notice, where did she go, and what has happened since? Problematic Behavior & Functional Medicine
Shownotes:
We kick off our Muslim Mental Health Hot Topics series this month with Functional Medicine Coach Momina Salim who discusses problematic behaviors in children and how preventive measures like good, pure food can make a change for the better. We want to extrapolate behaviors such as ADHD to mental health on what we eat and how we live. Hear how functional medicine inspired her own health journey and passion to help children.
While NO substitute for therapy and medication, we hope that by purifying our daily practices like clean eating, regular activity, and refreshing sleep, we can circumvent the mental health issues that plague our community. For those who suffer from mental health issues, please pursue medical attention first and then circle back here to help you maintain your optimum health status. If you are considering hurting yourself, please call or text 988 for the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Living Momsisterhood
Shownotes:
Dr. Jamillah Karim with academic qualification as long our wingspans joins us today to dispel several Muslim biases vs polygyny: she’s educated, she’s financially capable, she’s independent, she’ authoritative, she’s confident, and she CHOOSES polygyny as a way of life for herself. She is both frank about her support of it as a source for authentically loving and supporting Muslim sisterhood, as well as recognizing the role of jealousy in polygyny. She does an excellent job of weighing pros and cons aloud in this episode so if anyone has never entertained both sides of polygyny, consider doing it. Hear about how polygyny serves her spiritual purposes, which in and of themselves are enviable mashaAllah.
Furthermore, for all those viscerally anti polygyny, consider the pervasive barriers to mere SURVIVAL that Black Americans, specifically Black Muslims, face and why polygyny may be a critical tool they need to perpetuate healthy Muslim families. For anyone slamming polygyny willy nilly this month on our socials and DMs, consider the anti Blackness of your prejudice to choices made by our brothers and sisters in America. Are you ready to be a bigot? Are you ready to marry Black Muslim women into your non-Black Muslim family?
Note: For those who don’t know what the “Warith Deen community” mentioned in this episode is, it’s the community of primarily Black Muslim Americans who followed the son of Elijah Mohammad, Warith Deen Muhammad, to mass conversion from The Nation of Islam to Sunni Islam in the 1970s.

Power in Polygamy
Shownotes:
Coaches Fatimah and Coach Nyla of Outstanding Personal Relationships join us today to talk about their lives as cowives. Anything that rhymes is our cup of tea, as are these two ladies who teach us what sisterhood can look like if we get good with Allah SWT first. It’s a conversation you don’t want to miss, especially when we talk about how polygamy is practiced in the Black Muslim American community for reasons that some of us from immigrant roots have not considered before.
Again, no one is trying to convince Muslim moms to be co wives. But listen to these ladies talk about how they focus on their individual faith, support women, and use their advice to support a momsister in your life; and see what changes can come for both of you. Life could be beautiful if we applied what we learn from OPR to our own (monogamous) lives.
Tune in at 6pm EST tonight and share this episode with someone you know wouldn’t give polygyny the time of day! We are trying to educate, not convert here, don’t worry.

In Memoriam: Alwiya Mohamed
Shownotes:
Will Perry represents the men of the masjid for us today and boy is he gracious about it because we really dug into him: Where are all the men when it comes to DV in the Muslim community? Good news! The urban legend of the Muslim American Posse is well and alive, so sisters, you have your soldiers available to you if you’re willing to call on them. Brothers, build more local posses.
Unique POV we gain from Brother Will who takes us upstream to remind Muslim men, and in many cases teach for the first time, their role as protectors of women in Islam (if you want to scream, “We don’t need protection,” please relax and take a decaf. No bigger feminists than us here). MIDC works with many middle aged men who have never been married and have to re enter the ummah after decades of incarceration and trauma that fuels the dysfunction of some marriages. This happens to Muslim and non Muslim FYI.
How do we prevent another Muslim mom from dying when we can prevent it? Find out what MIDC is doing and help them continue this work through the community’s trauma after Alwiya's untimely death, and ask how to support the affected family. May Allah SWT grant her the highest level and protect her daughter from any harm seen or unseen. Ameen.

Emotional Abuse: Destroying From the Inside
Shownotes:
Hope comes on anonymously today to discuss her experience of emotional abuse–the scars that NO ONE SEES. Find out the walls that women in this situation run into: from perpetuating cycles of emotional abuse, cultural toxicity and the dearth of healing resources (including finances) that don’t permit them to leave.
Have you ever wondered if what you’ve experienced is abuse? Hear what Hope has to say and understand that what an abuser considers benign, he (10X more likely to be “he”) makes her feel like it is, too.
If you need help, call the National Domestic Hotline just to talk and explore what you’re experiencing: 1-800-799-7233. As always, you can DM us or email salam@mommyingwhilemuslim.com if you don’t know about the culturally competent, Muslim-friendly local hero organizations near you.

BONUS Replay: But He Doesn't Hit Me
Shownotes:
This is a special REPLAY of Madiha Schader’s experience of hiding the painful details of her emotional abuse from family and friends. The cultural reasons she did this are very clear in her story. She’s not unique, especially because her lived domestic violence wasn’t always physical. Mental, emotional, verbal abuse, financial/social isolation, witholding necessary care, and unreasonable demands from a place of control that endanger a person’s psychosocial wellbeing are equally suffocating, and a matter of life and death.
Madiha’s freedom came through her own son and her body. Find out how her closest friends identified what was happening and supported her until she was able to decide it was time to save herself.
If you know someone you suspect is in danger of physical violence or mental oppression, help her using the resources listed below. Don’t wait until your phone rings with the worst news ever; text her and let her know you’ve got a listening, non judgmental ear and shoulder for her.
If you’re someone who is in danger, having kids WILL NOT change an abuser towards you and might direct abuse toward your kid(s).

Nisa Homes
Shownotes:
Program Director of Nisa Homes, Yasmine Youssef joins us today to inform us about the differences between transitional homes and shelters, how to set them up in your own community, and how we can work together to put them out of business. Who else goes to work everyday wishing they don’t have to, any more than a domestic violence worker?
Nisa Homes has to open a 9th and 10th transitional home in Canada ASAP and you can help by visiting them @nisahomes. Donate right now so every victim has a choice, a literal safety net. She could be a momsister you know.
Tune in at 6pm EST tonight and share this with a friend who thinks they have no way out. Allah always makes a way.
