Kinship Assaulted
Trigger warning: sexual abuse
Mina is our guest today, anonymized to protect their identity. They share their experience with childhood sexual abuse and the effect it had on them, their parents, and their extended family. There are a lot of dynamics to consider and our inner justice-seeker may be triggered; however, the insight as a therapist and survivor they offer is really important to think about.
Let’s talk about second generation trauma, family expectations vs social expectations, our own healing journeys, and how severed ties are navigated in these terribly delicate circumstances.

The Space Between Us
#boymom Farheen Raza Abbas joins us to discuss the circumstances that caused her to limit relationships in her own family. Learn how to set healthy boundaries and protect our inner children as well as the next generations from toxic cultural behavior, i.e. bullying and body shaming, that can literally break apart families. Also find out how Farheen teaches how to end any tantrum in 5 seconds and avoid hostile family confrontations she learned from TikTok.

Burning Bridges
Wow, get ready to gain insight into one of the most painful situations some families must deal with: severed ties of kinship. As Muslims, family is everything. But what happens when it’s not?
Uzma kicks it off this month by sharing a major family rift and how she justifies severing ties, as well as where her reasoning falls short. We don’t ignore our own mistakes at this podcast! It’s a very intimate journey of self reflection and might help someone out there who has estranged family and wants to know how to deal with it in a healthier way.

New Fashioned
Muslim women know fashion, and as such, they know Lisa Vogl, spokesperson for modest fashion and domestic violence, and convert to Islam. Her revelation about converts post shahadah (coming to Islam) is an important reflection of the Muslim community, but even more important are her tips to step up to and for new Muslims. A good point she alludes to is that while Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, there are still a lot of people leaving Islam, and we have to consider why that’s true. A 2017 survey found 24% of Muslim Americans have left Islam, and that 55% of that group no longer identifies with any religion. *Collective shudder.*

Food Addictions: When It's Not Just a Craving
Samihah Huq joins us to discuss her experience with food addiction and how she’s hit a wall with her doctor in terms of understanding, naming, and taming it. There are barriers to wrapping our brains around food addiction in the Muslim community, starting with the doctor’s office and leading right up to the an auntie’s buffet table.
Just like any other addiction, food affects neurochemistry and looking at it as a passing issue, a phase, or anything other than a disease unto itself, is leading us on a dangerous path. Hear about some tools to help us identify the problem, work with our doctors to name it, and come up with a recovery plan.
