Watering Burning Buildings: My Muslim Kids and Drugs
Shownotes:
Tina Khan joins us today to discuss her experience watching her son’s spiral into drugs and mental health crises and what it did to their family. This is definitely an episode you want to hear before you choose to let your kids listen in, but it really does merit a listen by young people to hear what drug addiction does, not just to an individual, but a family and community.
Where are we as a Muslim community in terms of supporting our young Muslims struggling with drug addiction, and just as importantly to our momcrew, are we there for our moms who have a child in crisis like this? If not now, WHY NOT. If not now, WHEN?

Tune into this timely replay: Two Muslim American moms’ takes on abortion and government reach
Shownotes:
Zaiba and Uzma ended up having to have the conversation about abortion, as well as their religious and feminist views on the topic. This is not a scholarly episode, rather a discourse betwen friends on personal, very individualized choices they would or would not make if they were faced with an unplanned pregnancy as Muslim American moms.
To get an Islamic opinion on abortion, please talk to your favorite Islamic scholar. You can refer to our September episodes on female Islamic scholarship available on Apple podcasts, Google podcasts, Stitcher, or Spotify. For more information on abortion in Islam, take a look at the links for resources, but we have a summary of Yaqeen Institute’s information on abortion here:
Summary
Infanticide/feticide is haram (forbidden). Killing kids for fear of poverty is haram.
Contraception permitted; modern jurists have said common forms of birth control okay for no other reason than family planning
Until 40 days post conception both parties agree to abort or mom can decide alone (see Hanafi below) especially in cases of rape, incest, or physical/mental inability to carry baby to term
Up until 120 days, all scholars agree abortion haram unless pressing need ie mom’s life in danger or physical deformity of fetus
Pressing need is case by case, not a blanket one size fits all
After 120 days abortion only if mother’s life endangered
At any point intrauterine fetal demise (fetus dies in utero) warrants abortion because no soul present
Islamic schools of thought
Mâlikis: No birth control, no abortion after 40 days unless mom’s life is endangered, physically/mentally incapable
Ḥanafi: permitting abortion up until 120 days from conception, with some even allowing it without the husband’s permission
Ḥanbalis: permitting abortion up until 40 days, and only up until 120 days when a pressing need is present (such as rape, or an extreme fetal deformity incompatible with life)
Consensus: According to Dr. Hatem Al Haj, “Abortion in the first forty days of pregnancy upon the mutual agreement of both parents is permissible for a legitimate cause, such as the woman’s fear of not having the capacity to raise a newborn. Having said that, it is always preferable to avoid that, and if one relies on Allah’s help and puts his/her trust in Him, He will not let them down.”

Guarding a Mother's Spiritual Space
Shownotes:
Ustadha Safiya Ravat of Suhbah Institute reminds us how to focus on our Ramadan as moms–beyond the food, the rat race, the decor, and all the things we have to continue doing–to build our safe spiritual spaces with Allah SWT.
Uzma sniffs a lot in this episode after Ustadha shares the tafseer of a commonly misquoted and misused hadith. We couldn’t cut out all that helpful audio from our guest. This one’s for all the girls who grew up being told they didn’t belong in the masjid.
Share this episode with 2 moms you know to remind them how amazing they are and how loved they are by Allah SWT. Tune in at 6pm EST on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

Perpetuity of Ramadan Spiritual Productivity
Shownotes:
We are so honored to have Ustadha Hosai Mojaddidi talk to us about impediments to spiritual consistency in our lives. While some folks are trying to get through Ramadan day by day, we are excessively worried about the month coming to a close and not having learned anything. Y’all know we are an anxious duo at the podcast! How do we carry our Ramadan routines forward past this blessed month and not lose the spiritual high?
Let’s talk about train cars, the myth of parental ownership, suhbah (spiritual companionship, which is coming up later this month, by the way!), acts of worship we can rely on no matter our stage of motherhood, and insha’Allah walk away feeling energized to maintain the magic of Ramadan, keeping up steam for the rest of the year. Allahuma ameen.

Shownotes:
Zaiba and Uzma discuss their Ramadan 2022 plans and fears because let’s not continue saying “the pandemic is over” and go back to normal. It’s still a worrisome time, but less stressful alhamdulillah, and to that end, what does their mindset look like after preparing last month with their Nutrition & Fitness series? We hope you find yourself less stressed about “doing it all” this month.

Ketogenic Lifestyle for Muslims
Shownotes:
FitMuslimah Mubarakah Ibrahim tells us about what keto is today, and what it is NOT. Specifically, how is a ketogenic lifestyle (y’all know we don’t like to say “diet” on the podcast!) conducive to fasting in Ramadan in particular? Ketosis is our friend when it comes to fulfilling our worship goals during this holy month. There’s a reason FitMuslimah calls Ramadan “Shahr al Ketosis” (month of ketosis)!
Trace traditional diets of colonized people and learn the origins of our foods, and how those were forced to change to the detriment of global health. Find out FitMuslimah’s recommendations on the best food choices for our bodies to prevent metabolic syndrome and diseases associated with it, which is easier than we think. Zaiba & Uzma's Fitness Success 2022
Shownotes:
Zaiba & Uzma were so excited to talk about Ramadan prep and the physical, spiritual, and mental work that has to start now, that they recorded an episode together documenting what’s worked so far for them. While Zaiba has been on her journey longer than Uzma now, it’s useful to find out what we aren’t saying correctly to ourselves, and within earshot of our kids, that can sabotage our success before we even begin.
Sorry, but the conversation that one CAN’T do something like make up their fasts, run a mile, or complete a perfect Pinterest Ramadan tableau is untrue. Allah SWT made us capable and barring any actual disabilities, we can and need to stop convincing ourselves that we aren’t enough to reach our fitness goals. Yes, we are.

Cliteracy Consciousness
Shownotes:
Dr. Shaakira Abdullah aka The Halal Sexpert joins us today to talk all things clitoris because let’s be real, how many of us know exactly what it is….or WHERE it is? And it’s a part of our bodies!!! As Zaiba says in this episode, “We don’t know what we don’t talk about.”
Find out about our God-given organ (and He does NOT make mistakes!), its power, and the ways in which men have tried to oppress us through it. Good news: female circumcision is another failure of men and internalized female misogyny to thwart female pleasure. This episode includes terms like “lick,” “kink,” “orgasm,” and “squirt,” so stay tuned for that, preferably without the kids.
Let’s fix that today and appreciate the candor and passion Dr. Abdullah brings to the topics of intimacy, sex and Muslim sexuality. Don’t miss her advice to parents on how to talk to our kids about sex.
And let’s all get cliterate!

Detoxing Muslim Sex Series: Sex Notes
Shownotes:
We kick off our series this month breaking down some of the toxic practices and mindsets associated with sex and sexuality in the Muslim community. Who better to address some of those taboos than Zaiba and Uzma themselves? No guests for this episode, folks!
Your favorite cohosts are talking about some of their sexual hangups and breakthroughs, how they got over them, and how they’re raising sex-positive kids who aren’t afraid to talk or learn about sex or to be ashamed of the sexual beings they were created to be. Let’s be our kids’ role models for sex positivity, mamas! Cheers to breaking sexual trauma and sexual negativity!

Hands On/Off Parenting
Shownotes:
Aisha Jalali joins us today to discuss her survival guide to raising a 6-pack (of kids, not soda or beer) and being the hot, hot, hot mother in law she is now masha'Allah. The good news is, she is winging it while making it look easy. Like Aisha, WE want to "wing it" via many road trips, sujood ash shukr (prostrations of gratitude), family halaqa traditions, mama self care, and keeping all our ears and doors open, even when there's cucumbers and watermelon sugar involved. When They’re “All Grown Up”
Shownotes:
Chaplain Kirsten Jawad joins us today to engage in thoughtful conversation about parenting mindfully in an era when our young people are so much more dynamic than in the past–from flying the nest to staying in it and what work is required to keep our relationships healthy, faithful, and rewarding. While it’s great that our kids don’t want to leave yet, we still serve in our maternal roles to support their continued independence, resilience, and to help our mom-adult child relationship reach another level. Even when our kids fall off the path of Islam, there is a place for us to guide them back as adults without going nuclear (Uzma!!!) using the Kristenism “carefrontations” to bring them back home. It’s about maternal mindset and truly having tawwakul (truly trusting God’s plan) Allah, as well as tawwakul in our kids and our momselves! Write down her 5 rules to mommying that can make a difference with all ages, but really apply to our adult Muslim kids!

Building New Islands
Shownotes:
When we asked Joy Turner, mom of 3 adults
How do we conduct ourselves when adult kids don’t practice or act according to what we expect?
How do we retire the red panic button?
What keeps a mom from going nuclear?
we didn’t expect to end up in tears. Joy threw us a curveball on this one because y’all know we like to end on a laugh, but instead we shared happy snot. “Just love them.”
Thank you for bringing back joy, Joy. We pray that mommying these adult kids will build far better than what we shared before. Allahuma ameen.

My Adult Muslim Kids Series: Managing The Joy & Grief of Success
Shownotes:
Nora Abbasi, mom of 4 adult children, joins us today to share motherisms that helped her reach this glorious point as grandmother to 12 little Muslims, mashaAllah. Her advice and reflections are so helpful to those of us on the cusp of being empty nesters or those of who fear reaching that point. All things our kids face with us at their sides can be good. Caring about “what will people say,” sabotages us, though and her tips on how to avoid doing that are GOLDEN.
We learned SO MUCH about how to have healthy mindsets about our kids growing up, avoid opening the door to Shaytaan, and how to keep the spark alive with our partners while raising kids and especially after!
