Narratives from Foster Frontlines

Shownotes:

Aisha Mshood joins us today as a mom who fostered to adopt and continues to foster children in America in hopes of building the family of her dreams. Her commitment to her children is awe-inspiring, as is her COMPLETE reliance on and in Allah SWT during a process that is not easy. From catfishing to fostering, to all the blocks falling into place just when they needed to be to be called “mom,” Aisha is a resource for anyone who has considered all the reasons not to foster or adopt…..we only need one reason to do something good, y’all.

Please remember to pray for ease for Aisha and her family so that all the kids in her care get the best possible in this world and the next. Ameen.

Muslim Adoption & FC Common Q's

Shownotes:

Cultivating Families out of Texas has this core belief: when all faith communities care for foster and adopted children, NO CHILD WILL BE LEFT TO NAVIGATE LIFE ALONE. This really resonated with us and Executive Director and Rev. Amy Becezny and Board member Sarah Haider Alam of CF are on today to share their journeys of adoption, but more importantly, a lot of the challenges that come with building a family through adoption. These challenges can break a mom in the making before she even lifts off, unless she has faith, and to that end, CF brings together families of faith to fulfill their dreams of closeness to God as well as to serve His creation as he commands. The spiritual development of our children is as important as their physical and emotional safety, and this is why we mom every day.

Listen to some of the domestic and international requirements for adoptio, common questions that come up specifically for Muslim considering either path, and get inspired.

Adoption: What’s Holding Us Back

Shownotes:

Dr. Alia Irshad, pediatrician and adoptive mom, joins us today to talk about some of the hindrances to domestic adoption for Muslim parents, and the process of going international as she did. The process is demystified for us today, and her personal experience is the happy ending we want for every child of every faith and background. Let’s address some of the problematic beliefs the Muslim community has about adoption, and reveal the religious stipulations of adoption for our non Muslim audiences.

Dr. Irshad is a wealth of knowledge and expertise on her experience as well as on the rights of orphans in Islam, the mandate by Allah SWT Himself and the sunnah we are SO SLOW to fulfill, but ask about 4 wives and everyone wants to fulfill that sunnah! Check out the resources she’s collected for us and you won’t be sorry.

Unheard: Deaf Muslim Resources

Shownotes:

Which one of us has met a deaf Muslim? Chances are, very few, but it’s most likely because we aren’t creating spaces where we can, as Andaleeb Elayan, Executive Director of Global Deaf Muslim discusses today. We learn A LOT about accessibility and inclusivity and the most important pearl of the day from Andaleeb herself, “Your deaf child can do EVERYTHING except hear.” Treat them as such.

For our podcast audience, please be mindful that the voice you hear is that of voice interpreter, Cheryl, because Andaleeb speaks ASL. If you want to see Andaleeb speak, visit our You Tube channel: Mommying While Muslim. Remember that like all our guests, Andaleeb has her own voice and speaks for herself.

We had some connectivity issues and lost Zaiba during the course of this interview, but she’s in here in spirit! Don’t forget to check our notes to sign up for low cost ASL courses hosted by GDM. Ups and Down Syndrome

Shownotes:

It’s hard to imagine that schools would discriminate against students with disabilities, but Saadia Qureshi leaves us breathless as she discusses her fight to obtain inclusive education for her daughter with Down syndrome. The system is not designed to help our disabled students succeed, and the “separate but equal” model is anything BUT.

Learn not just about the emotional weight of a diagnosis without community or medical support, but how we can do better by insisting on equity in our educational settings. We pay for them, so they may as well serve us and our kids!

Opening Our Eyes to Blindness

Shownotes:

Sara Minkara continues our Disability Awareness series this month by talking about her blindness, the challenges of blind Muslims, and how to change the disability narrative from one of charity to the “suffering,” to one of value-based inclusion: you are important because you are you in every way you are created. The current “favor” dynamic perpetuates ableism and disempowers the disabled, so we have to undo the pity perspective. Accessibility and integration are RIGHTS that will change the problem, not favors done by the abled to others.

Tune in to hear all the things we take for granted, and all the beautiful things we miss. We don't pity, other, ignore, and pretend disabled Muslims don't exist anymore!

Queer Muslim Kids

Shownotes:

We get a lot of SOS messages from queer Muslim kids and what better way to answer them than by bringing on Erum Rani, founder of Iftikhar Community, who shares her journey of coming out and what that meant mentally and spiritually for her. Hear firsthand what it’s like inside the mind and heart of a queer Muslim child before rejecting them, and how cultural taboos oppress the most important relationship they have: with Allah.

Special note: Talking about something that the general Muslim community fears or ostracizes does not make it an endorsement or convert anyone into being queer. Talking about it WILL  humanize the people we are so quick to love when we “control them” and often too quick to reject when they make adult decisions that ultimately they’re responsible for. It’s not love them “anyway.” It’s, just love them.

Mothers Making News

Shownotes:

Nargis Rahman joins us today to talk about her dreams, her path to journalism with its U-turns forced by motherhood, and how she practiced her mommying philosophy of “wing it” with her own return to work. Her gems on our God-given potential, and the right of the people upon us to use it, are more than inspirational. They’re aspirational.

Learn about storytelling as a function of community journalism and how mainstream coverage often misses the treasure box of stories under its nose, when sisterhood elevating its individual members fosters our collective success, and about Nargis’ favorite community piece.

Power of the Pen

Shownotes:

Rowaida Abdelaziz joins us today to talk about the accidental journalism bug and why it’s important in our endeavor to experience fair and balanced news coverage.

We also discuss moms’ roles in supporting their kids’ dreams, role models and mentors when there are so few, keeping our heads down and ears up listening for the scoop, and getting paid in pizza. What opportunities does the media landscape offer to writers and consumers of news?

Fighting disinformation and misinformation is our job, not just as humans, but as Muslims, and supporting truth in all its forms is critical and true diversity takes work, even in the news!

It’s not us, we’re not crazy, per Rowaida! Studies prove that news coverage, much of which is informing policy, is not unbiased or stereotypical. Nuance is news, and we can pick up our pens to do that. Get writing!

Mainstream News: The Muslim Agenda

Shownotes:

The first to kick off August’s Muslims in the News series is Laila Alarian, Emmy and Peabody award winning journalist and Executive Producer of the Al Jazeera English investigative documentary program Fault Lines. She takes over the soapbox today, which is not to be missed.

While she’s breaking news on narcotics and Palestine, she’s also dealing with pandemic homeschooling and the emotional struggles working moms, which is ALL moms on our podcast to be clear, deal with, so it should resonate on multiple levels. Gem from the episode: “Perfect is the enemy of the good” (Laila Alarian is #smartmomgoals).

Find out what the mainstream news agenda is and if there is a conspiracy making Muslims look bad in the news. How do we break through that while we break glass ceilings at the same time?
