Hospice & Palliative Care and Muslims
Shownotes:
Our very own cohost Uzma Jafri joins us on this episode to explain why and how she specialized in medicine, "walking with" her patients at the end of their lives, and why it's Islamically important to know how to help families face the end of life. A lot of Muslims do not understand the difference between palliative care and hospice, so swipe left to read some easy definitions about them.
This episode is for anyone who is a caregiver because if it's not our kids, we are also taking care of an older generation at some point in our lives. As always, if you have further questions, stay tuned this month or DM us because we mean it when we say we are available for you.

Muslim Chaplains at the Deathbed
Shownotes:
Our favorite Muslim chaplain, Kristen Jawad, is the essence of compassion and understanding in serving the spiritual needs of Muslims nearing the end of their earthly journey. Knowing that she is providing comfort, solace, and support for individuals and families during these challenging times makes us so hopeful for our community getting its needs met by strong warriors willing to do this hard work. 🤝
Kristen recognizes the unique challenges and specific religious requirements that Muslims face at the end of life, helping Muslims find peace and fulfillment as they navigate this sacred transition. How is her work different from that of an imam’s and why is it necessary? 🕌🌺Her guidance fosters understanding and empowers families to support their loved ones in a manner that aligns with Islam. Considerate and critical community aftercare as well as the end of any relationship are all related to death too, and we dive into those topics as well.
Tune in on Apple podcasts, Stitcher, Amazon Music, or click the link in bio at 6pm EST tonight to hear about her work supporting Muslims and their loved ones at the end of life.

Replay: BLOOM Charity & Kids Leading to Jannah
Shownotes:
Sorry we are late to publish this week, but travel called and we answered big. Check our stories!
Enjoy this replay where we talked to Amin Shams, founder of BLOOM Charity, about her journey to adoptive motherhood, and how she didn't stop there. What moms stop at step A when there's so much more we know we can do for others?
Amina took it several steps up and started a charity funding play gardens for orphanages in Morocco. This supports the staff who care for the children, as well as provides social and emotional growth for the young residents of these homes. InshaAllah her deeds weigh heavy on her scales as you hear about her work at home and abroad. Allahuma ameen.
Use this episode to incentivize yourself to watch our Reels about one of the BLOOM Charity-supported play gardens we are visiting on our trip to Morocco this month. And find out how to get involved in this important work for orphans.

Muslim ban...on assault weapons
Shownotes:
Representative Nabeela Syed is the youngest Democratic member of the Illinois House and discusses her battle for gun reform. She gives us FOMO and nostalgia for our birth state (even Uzma is proud to admit this now), and so much hope, because the legislature was able to pass a law banning military-style assault weapons. Common sense gun control IS possible, y’all!
From her earliest memory of active shooter drills as a young child, Rep. Nabeela knew that it was messed up to deal with guns this way. Hear about gun reform and what the Muslim community can do to help make her job easier. Remember, as the youngest member of the state legislator, she is helping make America safer for our children and grandchildren and will be around a while insha’Allah to do it. So answer her calls to action!

Muslims on Concealed Carry
Shownotes:
Senator Nabilah Islam from Georgia State joins us today to discuss why she dove into politics. As she profoundly states, “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu,” and is both the youngest member of the Georgia State Senate as well as the first Muslim women in this important governing body. As a minority community in America (just 3%!) Muslim Americans literally cannot afford to ignore gun control in America like yesterday. @everytownusa is doing the research the government is NOT ALLOWED to do because of the powerful gun lobbies that don’t want Americans to have the real numbers about gun violence in America.
As you’ve seen on our socials, guns are the number #1 killer of American kids under 18 in this nation, and 59% of Americans have been affected by gun violence in this country. These are deplorable numbers and as voters and taxpayers (over 81% of Muslim American are citizens in this nation; source: Pew Research Center) we say, “NOT WITH MY MONEY!”
Learn what permitless carry is, and what it’s being sold as by state legislatures and governors signing executive orders to bring guns into hands without background checks, blocking red flag laws, and worse. You know, common sense gun laws?
Most importantly, find out how bills that the majority of Americans don’t want get passed. Say, what?!?!?! Let’s work together to make democracy work for us again.

Muslim Moms' & Egg Banking
Shownotes:
Aneesa Husain is as proactive a Muslimah as we’ve ever met, and we LOVE it. She joins us on our Muslim Moms Overcoming Infertility series this month and has the deets on a few of the reasons why women pursue egg freezing, how to get the process started, and special considerations. We apologize for the coughing because #allergies, and the slight echo because #audiotech sometimes stinks. You can totally stand both because this is MUST KNOW info.
We are getting A LOT of DMs and comments about the legality of fertility options in Islam, and we continue to urge everyone to find their trusted imam for those answers. WE are not qualified to speak on that. But we give space to everyone to share her story, and if it offends you, then it’s probably not for you. If it worries you, it’s meant to. If we aren’t worrying about these issues as Muslim Americans, then we are doing something wrong. No one comes on our podcast to ask for approval. Please don’t drop your fatawa here because we have imams who do that for us when we ask them for help.

Muslim Moms Surmising Surrogacy
Shownotes:
Sarah Khan joins us to discuss her journey finding and following through with a gestational carrier not just once, but TWICE 👶🏽👶🏽. What's a gestational carrier? You'll have to listen to find out. 🎧
We learned some new things in this episode about the emotional pathos a mom goes through in this situation BEFORE and during pregnancy 💔. It definitely makes us think there's more to mothering after fertility issues than we knew, and we are so grateful for the insight. Finally, the discussion of "to surrogate or not to surrogate..." is what you've been asking for!🎺🎺

Muslim Moms & Neonatal Loss
Shownotes:
Better late than never, but we finally chose what we think is an appropriate addition to this month's series on Muslim Moms and Overcoming Infertility. It's not an easy one, but it's a must in this series.
Trigger warning! Neonatal loss.
Listen to Abeeha Hassan's experience of neonatal loss after her IVF journey. All that anticipation and work to come home empty-handed is heartbreaking for anyone going through it. It can also be very lonely. Early on in her recovery, Abeeha wanted us to broadcast normalizing the grief of such loss, and to support it. In this episode, she taught us sabr (patience), shukr (gratitude), and tawwakul (unshaking faith in Allah SWT). Also, to shut up and show up for our friends who've experienced unthinkable loss.
Her process of closure may seem familiar to someone else who has gone this journey alone, and we are so touched that Abeeha chose to share her story with us. We pray a momsister finds comfort in knowing there’s someone sharing her story of loss and is available to talk about it. Say her daughter's name: "Jannah." @mamofalittleangel

Muslim Moms' & IVF
Shownotes:
Rabia Rajab is a survivor of infertility and IVF 🌟. Call it mother's intuition, but she knew before the doctors did about how tough her journey was going to be and initiated a decade long trip that would make most of us cut and run. Certainly, the Force (and the 4th) are with her.
💰 The costs of treatments are not only financial, but as you'll hear, social and emotional as well. For anyone considering it, this is a MUST listen💕.
👨👩👧👦 Rabia and her husband did not have a supportive community of Muslims going through the same process. That's on all of us, y'all. That is not okay. We need to fix that by speaking up about infertility awareness and treatments🤝. Note: Make sure you swipe left.

Muslim Moms' Inspirational Favorites
Shownotes:
Subhaan Ashrafi, founder of Sabr app, joins us today to tell us why he developed this for Muslim audiences and how it can help our families. His story of making a dream required resiliency and relationship-building, which he speaks on at length, an inspiration to us and to our kids. With persistence, he was able to create a unique app of its kind that is serving our families at the podcast so well.
In these times of increased mental health and spiritual needs in our community, we need quick coping skills at hand and to teach them to our children who’ve been born into social media FOMO culture. Sabr app serves this purpose and our kids use it to center themselves, focus on shukr, or gratitude, when things get rough, and it’s made a huge difference in our home lives.

Muslim Moms' Instructional Favorites
Shownotes:
Fahd Al Binali of IQRA Network joins us today to discuss his role in creating the platform to teach Quran and Islamic studies without children hating either or both. His specific interest in gearing education toward Western audiences is especially important because it focuses on application of these principles in students’ lives. This requires innovatively training and treating instructors in an organized way with accountability on all sides. IQRA fosters the relationship between teachers and students instead of the fear and dread that a lot of us experienced when learning Quran. We certainly didn’t have teachers with such integral preparation to engage Muslim American kids in our childhoods.
Uzma’s experience with the platform has been exemplary and her son is busily memorizing Juz ‘Amma, angry at her for not doing so herself. IQRA’s created a monster! @browndages co-founder Instisar Bashir joins us today to describe the product she created with her husband in order to provide POC with options to cover up their wounds with products that actually blend in with their skin. For too long, we’ve had to explain the mainstream bandaids when people can clearly see them on our darker skin when it’s really not relevant to discussions at hand. Can we just cover them up and move on already? Heal in silence!
Find out how this mompreneur created Browndages with NO EXPERIENCE in creating such a product and ended up on Shark Tank. There they won the support of no less than 3 Sharks, including Mark Cuban, who committed his NBA franchise to wearing only Browndages. Forget the Spark, Keeping the Fire Alive
Shownotes:
Jenny Triplett is a multimompreneur, author, and podcaster who joins us today to share her POV on surviving marriage, also the title of her podcast! Jenny and her husband Rufus give us tips online and in their programs, and she shares how she survived her own marriage and kept the spark alive through love and loss.
We take a curve down the dowry lane based on a recent post that generated a lot of conversation @rufusandjenny, but we bring it back. Her take on the Islamic marriage is conservative, so apply what works for you as we have. Feminists, take a deep breath. There is learning here for all of us, especially because the Black Muslim experience is different in key ways that many Muslims of immigrant heritage do not consider. Sit back and validate experiences.
Find out how couples can keep the spark alive in the bedroom through their decades together. It’s not all communication, but there are exercises we need to do outside of family logistics. This is the real meat of the episode, so don’t miss it!
